In corpore

Man always understood, even before he was able to explain. He understands and that’s it. He understands becuase it is the unknown itself that arrives and speaks: through the wisdom of a gesture, of a work, of a craft, of an opus. It is sufficient to think about how many tricks an expert knows, without knowing how to explain them: he simply knows. But even more directly, the unknown arrives without warnings, without too many complications. The unknown becomes flesh and speaks. Sure, we don’t have always the ability to listen. Especially us, in this part of the world, we are not used to listen: but in other places, when the unknown arrives, they give it a name, they treat it as something familiar, at least partly, and it is thus possible to understand it. To see the invisible it’s useful: it sustains imagination, faith, and makes us “touch it”. This unknown, often, is sung.

Also the work is sung, as it is joy, desperation, illumination. Every traditional song holds a little detail of every person who carried it to make it survive through generations and time. It holds the memory of desiring, asking, calling: every song is a footstep, a trace of something that once was, something human. One of the questions that guide our research aims exactly at discovering how much we have in common with the people who sang these songs.

This narration-concert presents a small part of the work our group carries out on the body, singing, and theatre. The performance is divided in two parts. of approx. 30 mins each.

In this occasion, we will sing mainly songs coming from three different traditions: Sacred Harp (USA), Spirituals (USA), and Cantos Espirituales (Cuba). Despite having been developed in the new continent, these songs have deep roots in the old world (Europe and Africa).
